Favorable changes have recently occurred in the pea market benefiting Ukrainian exports. India has extended the opportunity for free-trade import of this legume until June 30th. This decision serves as a positive signal for Ukrainian farmers, who are actively preparing to increase sowing areas for peas.

Antonina Skliarenko, Head of the Ukraine Pulse Association , emphasized, "As of April 7th, over 120,000 hectares of peas have been sown in Ukraine. The news of India's extension of free-trade import of yellow peas is perceived by the market as a stimulus for further investments in lpulse production, which will be reflected in the expansion of sowing areas, yield, and will ensure the domestic market and export potential of Ukraine. Currently, there is insufficient pea seed on the market, prompting Ukrainian farmers to sow commodity peas in the fields. Quality cleaned commodity peas can be used as seed material without loss of yield."

She further added, "As of today, practically the entire previous year's harvest of Ukrainian peas has already been realized. Currently, there are low stocks of peas in Ukraine. The remaining stocks are actively exported to Colombo, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka. India will be an interesting export market for Ukrainian peas next season. Despite India's attempts to meet its domestic needs for pulses through domestic production, weather conditions in recent years have not been conducive to obtaining sufficient yields. It can be expected that in the years 2024-2025, India will extend the opportunities for duty-free import."

It is worth reminding that at the end of February, India extended the permit for free-trade import of yellow peas until the end of April. Now it has been extended for an additional 2 months - until June 30th.
