Ukraine has gained access to the Chinese market for pea exports. This became possible following the completion of an audit conducted by the Chinese side. The Ukrainian Pulse and Soybean Association (UPSA) acted as an active participant in the process and an industry-side initiator, ensuring the consolidation of producers and the preparation of materials for the audit.
On March 25, the State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection reported that it had received a letter from the Embassy of Ukraine in the People’s Republic of China regarding the review by the Department of Animal and Plant Quarantine of the General Administration of Customs of China of technical and video materials prepared to assess the operating conditions of Ukrainian enterprises and their laboratory testing capabilities for the purpose of exporting peas. These materials were compiled by the State Service in cooperation with the NGO “Community of Pulse Producers and Consumers of Ukraine” (now the Ukraine Pulse and Soybean Association, UPSA).
“The opening of the Chinese market became possible thanks to the coordinated work of the state and the market, where the association ensured the consolidation of producers and preparation for the audit. This creates new opportunities for scaling up exports of Ukrainian peas,” said Antonina Skliarenko, President of the Ukraine Pulse and Soybean Association (UPSA).
The need for the audit is предусмотрена (stipulated) by the Protocol on phytosanitary requirements for the export of peas from Ukraine to China, agreed between the Ukrainian and Chinese sides. Following the review of the submitted materials, China granted permission for the export of Ukrainian peas.
The General Administration of Customs of China has already registered the first Ukrainian enterprises engaged in the storage and processing of peas that participated in the audit and are eligible to export to China in accordance with the Protocol requirements. At the same time, a broader pool of companies is being formed: some enterprises have already been included in the lists of exporters and producers of peas oriented toward the Chinese market.
To enter the Chinese market, Ukrainian companies must comply with the requirements of the approved Roadmap, which defines the key steps for ensuring phytosanitary compliance and organizing export processes.
The Protocol on phytosanitary requirements for the export of peas from Ukraine to China between the State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection and the General Administration of Customs of the People’s Republic of China, the Roadmap, and information on enterprises currently eligible to begin exporting peas following the audit are available at the following link:
